John graduated from the University of Limerick, Ireland with a BEng Degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1991, and later with a PhD in 1995. Working mainly on the Thermal Management of Electronics Systems, but also on other energy related projects, he has authored or co-authored over thirty conference and journal papers on topics related to experimental characterisation and numerical modeling. Before joining the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at the Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT) in 2000, he worked with Power Electronics Ireland, University of Limerick (1995-1997) and as Senior Research Engineer and later as Principal Scientist at the Nokia Research Centre, Helsinki, Finland (1998-1999). He has also acted as Session Co-Chair at the ITHERM 2000 Conference on Electronic System Thermal Management and on the organising committee of the THERMES 2002 Conference. Besides delivering Thermodynamics, Fluid Mechanics and Heat and Mass Transfer courses to GMIT undergraduate students in Mechanical Engineering and Manufacturing Technology he also retains an interest in conducting research and is currently supervising postgraduate students to PhD level in Refrigeration, Thermal Management of Electronic Systems and Novel Heat Transfer Technologies.
